How Arabic voice and WhatsApp support automation works for large companies

Speech-to-text software turns spoken Arabic, from a WhatsApp voice note or a phone call, into written text. AI then drafts a reply or sends the message to the right team, and on calls, text-to-speech software reads the reply aloud in a computer-generated voice. What decides whether the customer is looked after is how fast a named person on your team picks it up. The check sheet below shows what to test before you buy, and when to walk away.

Key takeaways

  • Arabic voice AI does three jobs: speech-to-text writes down what the customer said, AI drafts a reply or routes it, and on calls text-to-speech reads a reply aloud. A named person still owns the answer.
  • A vendor's language list tells you a tool accepts Gulf Arabic. It does not tell you how well it handles your callers. Test with your own recordings before you sign.
  • Let the AI answer simple questions, collect details and hand over with the transcript. Keep money, complaints and anything sensitive with a person, including in Ramadan hours and after hours.
  • Own the WhatsApp Business account, the phone numbers and the recordings, get prices per minute and per message in writing, and check data storage with your lawyer.

Before you buy Arabic voice AI

Take this sheet to every vendor demo. Use your own recordings, not theirs, and mark each row clear, vague or missing.

What to checkWhy it mattersHow to test itWalk-away sign
Gulf dialect understandingYour callers speak Emirati, Saudi and other dialects, and your staff accents vary too. A demo in clear formal Arabic proves little.Run a batch of your own voice notes and call recordings through it, including mixed accents. Compare the text with what was said.It only works well on their sample audio, or they won't run your recordings before you sign.
Arabic and English in one sentence (code-switching)Customers switch languages mid-sentence, as in "el-order ma wasal lein il-heen" (the order still hasn't arrived). If the tool drops one language, the meaning goes with it.Include recordings where callers switch languages, and check both come through in the text.English words vanish or come out garbled in the transcript.
Names, numbers and IDsEmirates ID, policy and booking numbers must be exact. One wrong digit sends the case to the wrong record.Say numbers and names in Arabic and English. Check the system reads them back to the caller before saving. No read-back step, or digits change between what was said and what was saved.
Handoff to a personThe caller should never have to repeat themselves. A slow or blind handoff is worse than no AI.Ask for a person mid-call and time how long it takes. Check the transcript and details arrive with the call.No way to reach a person on request, or your agent gets the call with nothing attached.
The voice that reads replies aloudA voice in the wrong dialect, gender or tone can put customers off before the answer lands.Play sample replies to staff and a few customers. Compare a Gulf dialect voice with a formal Arabic one.One Arabic voice only, or it reads everything in stiff formal Arabic.
Where recordings and transcripts are storedCalls and voice notes hold personal data. You need to know where it sits and who can open it.Get storage location, retention period, access and deletion in writing. Check the answer with your lawyer against the UAE personal data protection law (PDPL).Vague answers on location or access, or no way to delete.
Who owns the WhatsApp account, numbers and dataIf the vendor holds them, leaving means losing your number and your history.Check the WhatsApp Business account and numbers sit in your company's Meta Business portfolio, with vendor access you can remove. The account or numbers are registered to the vendor.
Cost per minute or per messageUsage-based pricing is hard to budget unless every line is written down.Get the price per minute and per message in writing, including setup, WhatsApp fees and phone line fees. One bundled monthly figure, or prices only given verbally.
Whether WhatsApp calling is available for your numbersInternet calling is regulated in the UAE, and availability can differ by country and number.Ask your WhatsApp provider to confirm in writing for your business numbers and your customers' countries. The plan relies on WhatsApp calls with no written confirmation.

How it works, step by step

This guide covers two flows: voice notes on WhatsApp and normal phone calls.

A voice note on WhatsApp

  1. A customer sends a voice note to your company's WhatsApp Business account.
  2. Speech-to-text writes out what they said, in Arabic, English or both.
  3. The AI notes what the customer wants and any details (booking number, branch, product), and saves them to your customer database (CRM).
  4. It drafts a reply in the customer's language.
  5. A named person on your team checks the draft, plays the voice note if anything looks off, edits and sends.

This is the same draft-and-handoff flow as Where UAE companies get value from AI first, which explains why the first reply decides whether you reach the customer at all. The only new step is turning the voice note into text.

A phone call

  1. A customer calls your normal phone number.
  2. Speech-to-text turns their words into text as they speak.
  3. The AI answers simple questions from content you have approved, such as branch hours or which documents to bring, or collects details and reads them back.
  4. Text-to-speech speaks the answer.
  5. When the caller asks for a person, or the question falls outside what the AI may handle, the call moves to a person, with the transcript and details on their screen.
  6. If no one is free, the AI takes the details and tells the caller when a person will call back.

Why this guide doesn't cover WhatsApp calls

WhatsApp also offers business calling through Meta's platform. In the UAE, the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) treats voice and video calls over the internet as a regulated service. Until your provider confirms in writing that WhatsApp calling works for your numbers and markets, plan around voice notes and normal phone lines.

Where speech-to-text and text-to-speech struggle in Gulf Arabic

Only your own recordings show how a tool does with your customers. Test hardest here:

  • Dialect. "Gulf Arabic" covers Emirati, Saudi, Kuwaiti, Omani, Qatari and Bahraini speech, and many callers come from elsewhere in the region. Test with a mix that matches who calls you.
  • Noisy lines. Customers call from cars on speakerphone, from malls and from building sites. Test with real call-centre recordings, not clean studio audio.
  • Code-switching. Moving between Arabic and English in one sentence is common in the UAE, as in "el-order ma wasal lein il-heen" (the order still hasn't arrived). Test that both languages survive in the transcript.
  • Numbers and names. Customers read numbers in Arabic, English or a mix, and one name can have several English spellings. Test whether the system reads them back before saving.
  • Formal Arabic in spoken replies. A reply in formal written Arabic (Fus'ha) can sound like a news bulletin when read aloud. Test whether a Gulf dialect voice sounds right to your customers.
  • The pause before the answer. Test how long the caller waits for a reply. Long gaps make people talk over the system or hang up.

Where Hamsa and similar tools fit

Expect Arabic-first vendors and big cloud speech services, sometimes sold through a contact-centre or WhatsApp provider, so ask which engine sits underneath. This is not a ranking, and Voyuma has not trialled these tools. Below is what each company's own pages say, checked in October 2026.

Hamsa (an Arabic-first vendor). Hamsa says its speech-to-text is designed for Arabic and handles Arabic and English in the same sentence. It lists Saudi, Emirati, Jordanian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Levantine and Modern Standard Arabic, and mentions custom vocabulary for company and product names. Its supported languages page says that when the language is set to Arabic, the model detects the dialect itself, Gulf included. Its voice agents overview lists transfer to human agents, but says call transfers work in its Flow Agents and not in its Single Prompt Agents, so ask which setup you are being quoted for.

Microsoft Azure Speech. Microsoft lists Arabic (United Arab Emirates), ar-AE, for speech-to-text, and two standard UAE text-to-speech voices, one female and one male, plus other Gulf locales.

Google Cloud Speech-to-Text. Google's supported languages page lists Arabic (United Arab Emirates), ar-AE.

What to keep with a person

Write the line down

Before anything goes live, write one page on what the AI may and may not do, and make it part of the vendor's scope.

  • The AI may: turn voice notes and calls into text, answer simple questions from approved content, collect and read back details, summarise, draft replies, route to the right team and book a callback.
  • The AI may not: quote prices or terms outside approved content, approve refunds, discounts or exceptions, change account records, take payment details, handle complaints, give medical, legal or financial advice, or keep a caller who has asked for a person.

Every reply with money, a contract or a complaint attached ends with a named person who checks it. Any caller who asks for a person reaches one.

Recordings and transcripts hold personal data, so get the vendor's storage and access rules in writing and check with your lawyer what the UAE personal data protection law (PDPL) means for your setup. This guide is not legal advice.

Ramadan hours and after-hours cover

Working hours change in Ramadan, and so does when customers get in touch. Check last Ramadan's logs to see where the busy hours moved, and update the AI's opening hours, Eid closures and callback promises before the month starts.

After hours, decide three things in writing:

  • Who is on duty, and how they get the transcript on their phone.
  • What the AI does: take the details and say plainly when a person will call back.
  • What goes straight to a person at any hour, such as a lost card, a safety issue or an urgent medical question.

If you already have a vendor demo booked and want a second pair of eyes on the check sheet, message us on WhatsApp.

Next step: scope one flow before you buy

Pick one flow, voice notes or calls, before vendor demos. Use the worksheet in Scope one AI workflow pilot before you buy AI to write the flow in one sentence, name the person who owns it, set what the AI may and may not do, and agree the one number that tells you it worked.

That is AI Integrations & Solutions work: one flow, connected to your WhatsApp Business account, phone lines and CRM, with the handoff to a person written down. If your team needs its own dashboard to work the handoffs, that is Websites & Apps work, scoped on its own.

You can see how Voyuma works before we speak.

Bring the sheet to your first call

Fill in the check sheet with your own recordings and your vendor's answers. When you're ready to scope one flow with a named owner, book a call and bring the sheet with you.

FAQ

  • Can AI understand Gulf Arabic voice notes?

Some tools say they can, and several list Emirati or UAE Arabic by name. A name on a list is not proof it works for your customers. Run your own voice notes and call recordings through the tool before you sign, and compare the text with what was actually said.

  • Should an AI answer customer calls on its own?

Only for simple questions and collecting details, inside a written line of what it may and may not do. Money, complaints and anything sensitive go to a person, and any caller who asks for a person should reach one, with the transcript attached.

  • Can we take customer calls on WhatsApp in the UAE?

Check before you plan around it. Calls over the internet are a regulated service in the UAE, and what is available can differ by country and by number. Ask your WhatsApp provider to confirm in writing for your numbers. Until then, build on voice notes and your normal phone lines.

  • What about recordings and data protection?

Calls and voice notes contain personal data. Keep the WhatsApp Business account and phone numbers under your company, get the vendor's storage location, retention and access rules in writing, and check what the UAE personal data protection law (PDPL) means for your setup with your lawyer.
